Men’s Tennis Downs UDC in Season Opener

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men’s tennis team opened the season with a 7-0 shutout victory over the University of the District of Columbia on Monday afternoon. The Hoyas won 2-of-3 in doubles play to pick up the point, and then swept singles play for the first win of the season.

The duo of Peter Beatty and Mac Rechan won, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles before an 8-4 victory by Michael Chen and Connor Lee solidified the point.

In singles play, it was a sweep with all matches going just two sets. At No. 1, Mark Militzer defeated Rob Bozic 6-3, 6-1. The No. 2 victory came from Luke Ross over Alexis Bagudin by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Lee picked up his second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Diego Pinto to make it 3-0.

The final three wins came at No. 4 Josh Marchalik (6-0, 6-2), No. 5 Ian Witmer (6-1, 6-1) and No. 6 Charlie Sharton (6-3, 6-0). This sweep gave the Blue & Gray the 7-0 victory on the afternoon to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Georgetown will be back in action this weekend as the squad travels to the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., for a three-day tournament.
