Men’s Tennis Competes at ITA Regionals

WASHINGTON - Nine members of the Georgetown University men’s tennis team competed at the ITA Regionals this past weekend in Lynchburg, Va., hosted by Liberty University. Four Hoyas advanced to the Round of 64, while freshman Mark Militzer (Charleston, S.C./Connections Academy) made it to the round of 32.

Militzer led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jared Isaacs of Duquesne in the first round of the Open Singles Draw. He went on to defeat Philip Mobius from Virginia Commonwealth, 6-2, 6-2, before falling in the round of 32.

Also picking up wins in the first round were freshman Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) over Beekman Schaeffer from St. John’s (3-6, 7-6 (0), 6-4) and senior Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) in a victory against Chris Kuhnle from Penn State (7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-4).

Sophomore Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) downed Dominic Lea from Duquesne in the first round of the open draw. He won a pair of matches in the qualifying rounds to advance to the singles draw.

In doubles play, the duo of senior Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) and freshman Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) defeated a pair from James Madison by a score of 8-5.

The Hoyas will have one more tournament this fall. The squad will travel to the Jack Kramer Invitational in Palos Verdes, Calif. on Nov. 3-5.
