WASHINGTON – The Georgetown men’s tennis team closes out their fall schedule at the ITA Regionals this week. The men play from Thurs., Oct. 17 until Tues., Oct. 22 in Blacksburg, Va., which is hosted by Virginia Tech.
The Hoyas have five men participating in the tournament: senior co-captain Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North), sophomore Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton), junior Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar), freshman Yannik Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) and junior Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). All five will play in either the singles main draw or the doubles portion of the tournament.
The men’s singles main draw will begin on Fri., Oct. 18. Khanin faces Rafael Ribas of the host school, Virginia Tech, in the first round of the main draw at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Mahlangu plays at noon on Friday against Joe Mills of Radford in his first matchup. Tropiano’s opponent is still to be decided based on a qualifier match that has yet to be played; his first round match will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Korber’s first round match will be played against Penn State’s Marc Collado at 1 p.m. on Friday. Distaso plays Joe Sierra of St. Joseph at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Korber and Mahlangu will pair up in the doubles tournament and face St. Joseph’s Pierre Brondeau and Paranjay Malholtra at 9 a.m. on Friday in the first round. Korber and Mahlangu have been paired in six doubles matches in the fall with an overall 2-4 record. Both of the pair’s victories came at the Georgetown Classic in late September.
