Georgetown Indoor Track & Field Competes at Nittany Lion Challenge

Jan. 15, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University track & field team opened the 2017 portion of the indoor season at the Nittany Lion Challenge, held at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on the campus of Penn State, on Saturday. The one-day affair was highlighted by five event titles with three for the men and a pair for the women. The Blue & Gray swept the distance medley relay (DMR) and the 1,000-meter events.

All-American Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic), in his season opening meet, outkicked Penn State’s Isaiah Harris on his own track to win the men’s 1,000-meter run, crossing the line at 2:21.96.

“It went out kinda slower than expected,” White said in an interview with FloTrack following the race. “I could hear [Isaiah Harris], I heard his coach, I heard the crowd – so I knew something was happening – I gave him a little peak, and just surged as hard as I could to hold him off. I ended up on the winning side of that, so that was good.”

Georgetown once again set the standard in the DMR, winning the men’s and women’s iterations and the men showing their depth by putting up a pair of teams to take the top two spots in the event. The women’s foursome set a new meet record, clocking 11:32.38.

In the women’s 1,000-meter run, All-American Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) ran 2:46.38 to win the event, edging out her best competition by nearly three-tenths of a second.

The men’s 800-meter run was a GU showcase as a trio of Hoyas took the top spots, led by Eion Nohilly (Golden’s Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) collecting the win (1:52.34), followed by Charles Cooper (Montreal, Canada/Lower Canada College) and Jack Salisbury (Rumford, R.I./La Salle Academy) in second and third. The triad kept the spread to a mere .36 seconds.

The Hoyas return to the track on Friday, January 20 as they compete at the NY Gotham Cup in Staten Island.
