Hoya Track & Field Runs Strong Times at Iowa State

Feb. 14, 2014

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown track & field team had a strong first day today at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. In a meet that features some of the best competition in the country, Georgetown may have had a preview of the upcoming BIG EAST Indoor Championships just one week away in some events. The Hoyas competed against some of the best talent in the country, the same talent that will also be on hand in one week when the Hoyas travel to the more familiar territory of the historic Armory in New York.

The featured relays of the night were in the men's and women's distance medley relay with the Hoyas taking second and fourth, respectively, in each event. Georgetown looked to the talent of Ryan Manahan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus), Devante Washington (Lafayette, La./Lafayette), Billy Ledder (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) and Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) in the event that totals 4,000 meters (1,200 / 400 / 800 / 1,600). The foursome got narrowly edged out by BIG EAST foe Villanova as the Hoyas timed in at 9:35.26 behind the `Cats time of 9:35.08. Showing up in third place was league newbie Butler with a time of 9:37.35.

In the women's DMR, the Hoyas relied on the expertise of Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo), All-American Amanda Kimbers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) - a foursome that boasted both young talent as well as racing knowledge. The quartet timed in at 11:22.68, behind the likes of Duke, Minnesota and home team Iowa State.

Kimbers raced earlier in the evening, competing in the women's 200-meter dash, an event that showcases the versatility of the All-American, who excels from the shortest of distances with the 60-meter dash through the 400-meter leg in the DMR. Kimbers took second place with a time of 24.39 (24.386), one of her best showings this season.

The Hoyas return for a slew of events on Saturday, February 15, the final day of the meet before returning to the slush-filled streets of the District. The Blue & Gray will utilize this weekend as the final prep before leading in to the championship portion of the indoor season with the BIG EAST Championships in one weekend held at the Armory in New York City, familiar territory for Georgetown.
