Georgetown Track & Field Ready for Day Two of BIG EAST Championships

WASHINGTON - The Hoyas are in Geneva, Ohio this weekend for the 2013 BIG EAST track & field championships. On day one, four men and seven women advanced to the finals of their respective events and will race for a championship on Sunday. The men's team stands fifth overall in the team rankings and the women are currently in tenth heading into day two of competition.

Hansel Akers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was the first of the men to qualify for Sunday finals by running a time of 1:04.63 in the 500-meter dash, the seventh fastest of the day in that event. Also moving on to finals is Devante Washington (Lafayette, La./Lafayette) who grabbed the eighth and final spot in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 48.40, the fastest 400-meter time for the Hoyas this season.

In the men's 1000-meter preliminaries Billy Ledder (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga College) finished fifth overall and qualified for finals on Sunday with a time of 2:27.29. Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) was the fourth man for Georgetown to qualify, running a season best 1:52.50 in the 800-meter run.

In addition to four finals qualifiers the men's team also had two second place finishers in their event finals. Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) earned the silver in the men's 5000-meter run in a time of 14:19.54, improving on a tenth place finish at BIG EAST championships last year. The distance medley relay team of Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), Mike Andre (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township), Dylan Sorensen (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly High School) also grabbed second place by finishing with a time of 9:48.78.

 

 

Tenille Stoudenmire (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) was the woman of the day for the Hoyas, qualifying for finals in both of her events. She dashed into the finals the of the 60-meter event with a time of 7.55 seconds and later advanced in the 200-meter dash for her time of 24.31. Deseree King (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) showed her speed as well by finishing first in preliminaries of the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:13.03, advancing her to finals on Sunday. She finished six overall in the event at last-years BIG EAST championships.

All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional paced the field in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:07.38 and was one of three Hoyas to advance to finals in the event, including Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and Shanique Dasilva (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford. Hannah Neczypor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton and All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) would do the same in the 1000-meter run preliminaries in a one-two finish.

All finals will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17 including event finals in the mile run, the 3000-meter run, the 4x400-meter relay and triple jump for the Hoyas. Event coverage can be followed at BIG EAST Championship Central.
