WASHINGTON - Andrew Springer capped off a spectacular weekend with his second BIG EAST individual title of his career and the 2013 outdoor championships as he won the men's 5,000-meter run today, capturing both distance championships having previously won the 10,000-meter run on Saturday. Sunday was the final of the three-day championships held at the Bauer Track & Field Complex on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
Springer yet again proved that he was above and beyond the field, besting the rest by more than five seconds in the men's 5,000-meter run following up his title in the 10,000-meter run on Saturday. Springer ran 14:23.54, bettering Providence's Shane Quinn's 14:28.98. Bobby Peavey also competed in the race, running 14:52.68 for 12th place in the field.
Also capturing a BIG EAST Championship was All-American Chelsea Cox who bested the field with a 2:07.44, easily taking first by more than one second in the two-lap race. In the same field, Andrea Keklak finished seventh for the Hoyas with a time of 2:09.88.
Deseree King clinched her first individual BIG EAST title with a win in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Just her second year of eligibility in outdoor and she handily broke one minute with a 58.19, besting Notre Dame's Megan Yanik with a time of 58.65. King was the first in just a trio to break the one minute barrier.
Cox and King then teamed up with Tenille Stoudenmire (lead off) and Mirable Nkenke (third leg) in the women's 4x400-meter relay to take third place with a time of 3:38.49 with King as the anchor of that squad. This was just one week after the Hoyas won the ECAC section of the women's 4x400-meter relay at Penn Relays.
Billy Ledder got narrowly edged out in the men's 800-meter run as he took third by one-hundredth of a second, timing in at 1:50.17, following Rutgers' Monroe Kearns on his home track, running 1:50.16.
The women's 5,000-meter run featured four strong performances with All-American Madeline Chambers putting forth a fourth-place performance with a time of 16:34.58 after a strong performance in the 1,500-meter earlier in the day. Chambers was followed up by Samantha Nadel in fifth place with a time of 16:43.83 and Kirsten Kasper in sixth (16:46.52). Annamarie Maag finished ninth in the 13-person field with a time of 17:02.28.
In the men's 1,500-meter run, Peavey placed fourth in the 12-man final with a time of 3:49.56 among a field of some of the BIG EAST's most talented.
The women's 1,500-meter run saw a trio of Hoyas in the finals with Katrina Coogan finishing sixth in the 12-person race with a time of 4:26.35. Chambers finished 10th (4:31.87) followed by Kelsey Smith in 11th with a time of 4:33.66.
Shanique Dasilva led off for the Hoyas women's 4x800-meter relay followed by Coogan, Keklak and Hannah Necypor. The foursome finished third with a time of 8:45.53, with the top three teams breaking the previous stadium record at Bauer.
Eghosa Aghayere put up a mark of 15.21 in the men's triple jump to finish sixth overall as the lone Hoya to score points in the field events.
