LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Georgetown University track & field team is peaking at the right time of the season as the Hoyas recorded a personal record (PR) and a season best on the second day of the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships, hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington. The meet serves as the precursor to the final site of the championships at the University of Oregon and following Friday’s competition, four more Hoyas are Eugene bound. A live stream of the event will be available on the SEC Network+, available through the WatchESPN app.

“Emma Keenan and Joe White kicked off a huge evening of qualifying for the Hoyas,” Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Julie Culley said. “Emma ran a season best by almost three seconds to nab the second time qualifier, while Joe White cruised through the rounds winning his heat handily and moving on for the third-consecutive year to Oregon. The Hoyas continued their steeplechase tradition of qualifying at least two men to the steeplechase semifinals in Eugene for the fifth year in a row. Darren finished a comfortable second in his heat to advance while Scott ran a PR to get in on time. We are excited for the last round of competition and to get a few more qualified to the NCAA finals.”

In what has been her fastest 800-meter run this season, senior All-American Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) ran 2:04.33 to return to Eugene, Ore., as she advances to the 800-meter semifinals for the second-consecutive season. Keenan, breaking 2:05 for the first time this season, ran a gritty quarterfinal and is peaking at the right time of the season, clinching the second of a trio of time qualifiers. As the field surged up the final straightaway, she held on to nab the fourth spot in her heat.

All-American Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) remained undefeated on the University of Kentucky track as he again won his heat, clocking 1:48.13, to advance to the 800-meter semifinals in Eugene for the third-consecutive year. White shifted into another gear on the back straightaway of the bell lap and held off the field over the final push on the home stretch.

Georgetown will again send a pair of Hoyas to Eugene in the steeplechase as All-American Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) recorded an automatic qualifier with a second-place showing in his heat and All-American Scott Carpenter (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) notched a time qualifier, running a personal record (PR) in a heat that featured the fastest collegiate time this season. It is Fahy’s third berth to the finals site and Carpenter’s second. This is the second-consecutive season the pair has advanced to the steeplechase semifinals and the fifth-straight year the Hoyas have sent a pair of athletes to the finals site in the steeple.

The Hoyas continue competition on Saturday with three events slated for the day.
