All-American Andrew Springer
May 30, 2014
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - On the first day of the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships - East Preliminary, the Hoyas were able to send one athlete to the finals site of the outdoor championships and an additional seven continued on the road to Eugene. It was a sticky and humid day at Hodges Stadium, but as the sun set and the temperatures dropped, the setting seemed appropriate for the East Prelims, hosted by the University of North Florida (UNF) through Saturday, May 31. The prelims determine who will advance to Eugene, Ore., for the finals of the NCAA Championships.
All-American Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) is the first Hoya to punch his ticket to Eugene as he finished 11th in the men's 10,000-meter semifinals with a time of 30:03.05. Springer will return to the finals where he finished 13th during the 2013 season. Springer ran a strong race and as the lead pack thinned out, did a great job at maintaining in a race where he ran solo for much of the second half. As the field kicked over the final 400 meters, Springer picked off a couple competitors in front of him to solidify his 11th-place showing.
The Hoyas stacked Friday's 800-meter quarterfinal with three of the five entered in the first round winning their heat to advance automatically. In the first heat, All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) looked better than ever as she ran 2:04.25, a personal record (PR) for the senior and the fastest time in the first round. Cox came off the final turn and moved in to the lead over the final straightaway and easily taking first in heat.
All-American Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) won the third heat of the day, staying in the top three for the entirety of the race and closing over the final 30 meters of the race to take over first place with a time of 2:04.44, the third-fastest time of the heats.
All-American Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) was the third Hoya to take first in her heat with a time of 2:05.04, well ahead of the field and the eighth-fastest times of today's heats. The Hoyas send three student-athletes to Friday's quarterfinal field of 24. The Blue & Gray are the only school to send three athletes to the quarterfinals and only two other schools have multiple entrants with Duke and Virginia Tech both sending a duo to the quarters.
All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day) advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's 1,500-meter run today as he competed in the last of four heats. With the top five from each heat advancing to the quarterfinals, Bartelsmeyer stayed on the rail for much of his race and when the pack made a move on the final straightaway with competitors running five across, Bartelsmeyer stayed on the inside, taking seventh in his heat and 13th overall with a time of 3:46.60, qualifying for Saturday's quarterfinal.
In the women's 1,500-meter first round, All-Americans Hannah Neczypor (Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) and Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) handily qualified for the quarterfinals of the event, to be competed on Saturday. Neczypor finished fifth in the second of four heats with a time of 4:23.50, making sure she was part of the lead field that separated itself with 200 meters to go. Schneider finished third in her event, timing in at 4:16.69, running the rail the entirety of the race and holding on to her position.
The men's 800-meter run saw All-American Ryan Manahan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) run a time of 1:48.95, good enough for sixth place in the fourth heat and a PR for the freshman. His time matched Mississippi's Holland Sherrer who finished fourth in the second heat. The two were battling for the final qualifying spot and in lieu of a coin toss to determine who advanced, the NCAA allowed 25 entrants for Friday's quarterfinal due to the ability to host an extra competitor on UNF's nine-lane track.
The 2014 NCAA Championships East Prelim determines who will advance to Eugene, the finals site of the NCAA Championships, held June 11-14 and hosted by the University of Oregon.
