Schneider Advances to Eugene for NCAA Track & Field Championships

All-American Rachel Schneider

May 31, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The final day of the 2014 NCAA Track & Field Championships - East Preliminary went off without any weather delays on Saturday, a first for the three-day meet, held at Hodges Stadium and hosted by the University of North Florida. The Georgetown track & field team added one more athlete to the contingent it is sending to the finals site of the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., and hosted by the University of Oregon from June 11-14.

In the women's 1,500-meter quarterfinal, All-Americans Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Hannah Neczypor (Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) both lined up in the second of two heats. The heat went out slower than the first and finishing in the top five was necessary to advance to the semifinals. Despite Neczypor leading the pack early, it was Schneider who stayed with the front pack through 1,200 meters. With just 300 meters to go, it was clear that the top five had pulled away from the remainder of the quintet held on through the finish with Schneider clocking 4:17.04 and punching her ticket to Eugene.

The women's 5,000-meter semifinals saw a trio of Hoyas compete in the first of two heats. Samantha Nadel (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) was the top finisher with a time of 16:18.31 - the sixth-place time in her heat. With the top five times from each heat and the next two fastest times advancing to the finals of the event, Nadel had to play the waiting game through the second heat for her fate to be determined. A fast second heat led by Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino proved unfortunate for Nadel, a sophomore in eligibility, as her mark got pushed out of the time qualifiers. Haley Pierce (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall School) and Annamarie Maag (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit Prep) finished 11th (16:31.11) and 19th (17:01.99), respectively, in the first heat.

All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day) ran a time of 3:48.99 in the second of two heats in the men's 1,500-meter quarterfinals. The time was good enough for 11th in his heat. Collin Leibold (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) finished eighth in his 5,000-meter semifinal heat with a time of 14:23.06.

The Hoyas are off until the NCAA Championships where they will send six student-athletes in four events to historic Hayward Field.
