Dennin Runs Season Best in 10,000 and Finley Advances to Finals of 400 Hurdles at NCAA Track & Field Championships

Mark Dennin

June 6, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa - On the first day of the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, the Georgetown Hoyas had a successful outing with London Finley advancing to the finals of the women's 400-meter hurdles and a top-15 finish from Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) in the men's 10,000-meter run.

Competing in a race that broke records standing since the 1980s, Dennin put up a top-15 time in his first outing in the finals of the men's 10,000-meter run. The pace picked up after the first nine minutes of the race and it was evident that the weather - a cool 70 degree night - and circumstance would make the race a great one to watch. Dennin ended up in a chase pack that spread thin throughout the course of the race. Dennin clocked in at 29:30.97, one of 16 athletes to break 30 minutes in tonight's race, besting his previous season PR at the Stanford Invitational (29:31.99). Alex Lundy (Littleton, Colo./Heritage/Maryland) ran 31:00.68 to finish 22nd overall.

Finley (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Mary's Academy) advances to the finals of the women's 400-meter hurdles after running 57.18 in today's semifinal. The senior continues her stunning senior season with her first appearance in an NCAA Championship final. Finley finished third in her heat, the first of three, with the top two advancing to Friday's final from each heat plus the next two fastest times from the entire field. Finley's mark held on as the fastest non-automatic time from the field. Finley will compete in the finals of the women's 400-meter hurdles on Friday at 6:45 p.m. ET.

All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) ran 2:06.16 to finish seventh in her heat and 18th overall. The time was not enough to reach the finals on Friday.

Live coverage of the championships will be available via ESPN3.com on Thursday and Friday with live coverage on ESPNU available on Saturday, June 9.
