WASHINGTON - At historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, the first day of the 2013 NCAA Track & Field Championships without a hitch. Three Hoyas were in competition today in two different events.
Max Darrah and Dylan Sorensen both competed in the semifinals of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Darrah competed in what would be the faster of the two heat semifinals, heat one. The top five from each heat advanced automatically with the next two best times getting in on time. Darrah finished sixth in his heat and though he started well, what was more impressive was his finish. Darrah was one of just four on the track to split sub-1:05.00 over the final 396 meters. Darrah finished with a time of 8:43.71, the first mark to qualify on time.
Sorensen competed in the second of the two heats. Sorensen finished seventh in his heat with a time of 8:53.51, taking 15th overall and falling just shy of the finals.
Darrah will compete in the finals of the steeplechase on Friday, June 7 at 8:40 p.m. ET.
All-American Chelsea Cox competed in the semifinals of the women's 800-meter run. Her time of 2:13.44 would not be enough to advance to the finals.
Georgetown continues at the NCAA Championships through Saturday, June 8.
