Andrew Springer

June 6, 2013

WASHINGTON - At historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Andrew Springer was the lone Hoya to compete at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Springer competed in the first of his two finals that he has qualified for.

A field of 24 athletes started the men's 10,000-meter run with Springer being one of six to be double-entered in both the 10,000- and 5,000-meter run. The senior, who is just in his third year of outdoor eligibility stayed with the pack through the first 4,000 meters. With 13 laps to go, a lead pack began to form with Arizona's Lawi Lalang splitting 1:06.93 at the 4,800 meter mark.

Springer remained with the chase pack through the remainder of the race as the group thinned out. Despite a strong effort from BYU's Tylor Thatcher who split 1:05.04 on the bell lap, Springer was able to hold him off and take 13th place with a time of 30:07.07, while Thatcher recorded a 30:07.12.

Springer will compete in the men's 5,000-meter finals on Saturday, June 8. Tomorrow's action will see Max Darrah compete in the finals of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
