WASHINGTON - Georgetown track & field standout Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) ran the second-fastest time of his career to advance to the finals of the men's steeplechase at the 2015 USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships on Friday night. Newly minted an All-American, Fahy is no stranger to historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, as he competed on the same track a mere two weeks ago at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

"I'm excited to make the final," Fahy said after the race. "I felt I could have done better at NCAAs and it's a little chance for redemption."

Fahy competed in the second of a two-heat prelim, the by the numbers faster of the two heats. Up against the likes of Nike professionals Donald Cabral, Daniel Huling, Andrew Bayer and Cory Leslie, Fahy did an impressive job holding his own against his professional competition.

The pace was fast and by just shy of the halfway point of the 3,000-meter race, the field was running in a straight line with Fahy among the top six, the only collegiate competitor to be among the leaders.

At the bell lap, Fahy was part of a distinct group of five who had pulled away from the remainder of the field. After the final water jump, Fahy took off and pushed up the final straightaway to clock 8:39.04 for fourth place, an automatic qualifier to the finals. The time is the second-fastest of his career, previously running 8:38.07 at the NCAA East Preliminary.

"It's a lot of fun to race alongside guys who I looked up to in high school," Fahy continued. "It also helps having so many talented foreigners in the NCAA because it prepares you for meets like this."

Fahy is one of two collegiate athletes to advance to the finals of the men's steeplechase along with Michigan's Mason Ferlic. The finals are scheduled for Sunday at 5:06 p.m. ET.

All-American Ryan Gil (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) also competed in the preliminary round, timing in at 8:55.26 to finish eighth in the same heat. His time was not enough to advance to the finals.

Earlier on the track, former Hoya All-Americans Treniere (Clement) Moser and Rachel Schneider lined up in the second of a three-heat women's 1,500-meter semifinal. Moser, who now runs for Nike's Oregon Project, and Schneider, an athlete with Under Armour, both advanced to the finals. Moser coasted to a second-place finish (4:08.70) with ease, an automatic qualifier, while Schneider's 4:09.12 was enough to qualify on time. The finals are scheduled for Sunday at 5:40 p.m. ET.
