No. 19 GU Men Finish 14th at 2017 Cross Country Pre-National Invitational

Oct. 14, 2017

WASHINGTON - Ranked No. 19 in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the Georgetown men’s cross country team finished 14th at the 2017 Pre-National Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisville at the E.P “Tom” Sawyer State Park. The meet serves as an opportunity to learn the course where the NCAA Championships will be held at the end of November. On a hot and humid day in Louisville, the Hoyas finished 14th in the men’s red 8-kilometer course, a 41-team varsity race.

“We were not very good as a team today,” Head Coach Brandon Bonsey said following the race. “I gave the team a poor race plan and we also weren’t tough enough as a team. The good news is that this meet does not define the season. We will head back to practice and make sure that we give a much better effort in two weeks at the conference meet.”

All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s School) led the way for the Hoyas, finishing eighth overall with a time of 23:19.0. Green has consistently been the low stick for the Blue & Gray, the top-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“Jon Green ran a great individual race,” Bonsey continued. “He was a little too aggressive in the middle but we will fix those tactics moving forward. That was a great field and he came in tired. Finishing where he did and running that fast on a hot day was a great effort.”

The remaining point scorers had a spread of less than 24 seconds with Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and Matthew Bouthillette (North Providence, R.I./La Salle Academy), a pair with experience on the national scene, finishing second (24:22.7) and third (24:34.7), respectively, on the squad.

On how this weekend affects the season, Bonsey noted, “We weren’t very good this weekend last year and then we came back to run well at the three postseason meets. I’m confident we will do that again.”

Georgetown will return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 28 when both squads travel to Kenosha, Wis., for the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships.
