WASHINGTON - The Georgetown women's cross country team placed its first five runners in the top 20, executing a pack running strategy perfectly, to win the BIG EAST Cross Championships today at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., for the first time since 2001. The Georgetown men's team finished second in a field of 14 teams.
The Georgetown women took first place with 58 points followed by Connecticut (68), Providence (80), Villanova (83), Notre Dame (90), Syracuse (117), Marquette (222), Cincinnati (296), Pittsburgh (297), Rutgers (302), USF (330), St. John's (391), Louisville (398), Seton Hall (407) and DePaul (418).
All-American Madeline Chambers (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) led the way for the Hoyas with a seventh-place showing, timing in at 21:00.01 over the six-kilometer race, a 5:38 pace. Right behind Chambers, Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Philips Exeter Academy) placed eighth with a time of 21:04.77 (5:39 pace). Coogan's classmate Annamarie Maag (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit Prep) was the third Hoya to cross the finish line with a 10th-place performance of 21:15.83 (5:42 pace).
In her first BIG EAST Championship, freshman Samantha Nadel (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) was the fourth point scorer for the Hoyas turning in a 16th-place performance with a time of 21:26.18, pacing 5:45, followed up by Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) as the final point scorer for GU with a time of 21:30.24 (5:46 pace), good enough for 17th place.
Also competing for the women: All-American Emily Jones (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield) finished 19th (21:33.07 / 5:47), Hannah Neczypor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) finished 34th (22:06.26 / 5:56), Jenna Davidner (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) finished 37th (22:12.51 / 5:57) and All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) finished 39th (22:24.17 / 6:00).
The Georgetown men finished second with 67 points behind Syracuse (37 points). Notre Dame finished third with 70 points followed by Providence (109), Villanova (114), Louisville (129), Cincinnati (216), Marquette (240), Connecticut (278), DePaul (303), Rutgers (307), Pittsburgh (321), USF (418) and Seton Hall (434).
"The men ran very well," Men's Distance Coach Brandon Bonsey said. "Today was our best race of the year. Our goal this year is to be a better team every time we line up to race than we were the last time and we improved a lot since Pre-Nationals. Andrew Springer and Ben Furcht did a great job and it was easily Ben's best race in a Georgetown uniform."
GU's men were led by Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) and Ben Furcht (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) who finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Springer timed in at 24:42.78 over the eight-kilometer race while Furcht ran 24:45.53, both pacing 4:57.
In his first season on the Hilltop Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) finished 11th, also breaking 25 minutes, with a time of 24:56.47, a pace of 4:59 and one of the top performances by a true freshman in GU's history. Miles Schoedler (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) was the fourth Hoya point scorer with a time of 25:05.36, a 5:01 pace and good enough for 18th place. The final GU point scorer, John Murray (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), tallied 25 points for the Blue & Gray with a time of 25:17.85, a pace of 5:04.
"Today's race went out pretty slow," Bonsey recapped. "It was a big pack for a long time. After about three and a half miles, the pack finally started to thin out. Springer and Furcht did a great job moving through the field."
Next on the schedule for the men is the UVA Invitational on Friday, November 2 while the women are slated to compete at the Panorama Farms Invitational on Saturday, November 3 - both in Charlottesville, Va. Both teams will compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, November 9 held in State College, Pa.
