WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University cross country program traveled to Wisconsin for the 2013 BIG EAST Championships. The women's team, ranked No. 3 nationally, took second in the conference meet behind league foe No. 4 Providence. The GU men finished fourth in the conference championships.
Georgetown's top finisher was All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) who finished fifth overall in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 20:23. Samantha Nadel (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore), in a breakout season, matched Schneider's time, finishing in sixth, right on Schneider's shoulder. All-American Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) rounded out the top-10 finishers with a 10th-place showing, timing in at 20:44. The Hoyas stuck together as a team with Rachel Paul (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East), competing in her first season of cross country finishing 11th, matching Coogan's time at 11th place.
Haley Pierce was the final point scorer for the Hoyas as she finished 15th with a time of 21:05. Of the seven runners competing for the Hoyas, the time between the top finisher and the final finisher was less than one minute.
The Hoyas finished second with 47 points behind No. 4 Providence. No. 7 Butler finished third with 66 points followed by Villanova (93), Xavier (130), Marquette (155), Creighton (228), DePaul (242), Seton Hall (277) and St. John's (299).
On the men's side, the Hoyas finished fourth in the nine-team conference meet with 76 points. The field was led by No. 26 Villanova with 36 points, followed by No. 19 Providence (49), Butler (61). In fifth place were the Marquette Golden Eagles (151), followed by Xavier (215), Creighton (224), DePaul (225) and Seton Hall (253).
"Andrew Springer and Brian King put themselves in good position early," Head Men's Distance Coach Brandon Bonsey explained. "They executed the plan well for the first three miles but weren't able to really move up in the last two miles. Brian got a side stitch with a mile to go and that caused him to move back in the last mile. He stayed tough despite that."
Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) finished eighth overall with a time of 24:22. Despite his side stitch, King (Sonoma, Calif./Cardinal Newman) finished 13th overall with a time of 24:37. Collin Leibold (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) was the third Hoya finisher with a time of 24:56, good enough for 17th place. Following right behind was John Murray (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) in 18th place (24:59). The final point scorer for the Hoyas was Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) in 20th place with a time of 25:01.
The middle portion of the race proved to be the most difficult for the Hoyas as they struggled to maintain the position they had established in the beginning of the race.
"We needed to do a better job of committing to the race plan," Bonsey explained. "Once the race got hard at two miles, our guys let the people they should have been racing against pull away. Once they came out of the fields just shy of three miles, our guys were out of position and they were not in the mix when the real racing started in the last 2,000 meters."
The Hoyas will continue the season at the Mid-Atlantic Regional on November 15 in Bethlehem, Pa.
