Jonathan Green Wins Mid-Atlantic Region Title

Nov. 10, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown men's cross country All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John's School) stole the show on Friday morning as he won the individual title at the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships, held in Bethlehem, Pa., and hosted by Lehigh University. The Georgetown women finished third overall (109 points) behind No. 19 Penn State (31) and No. 9 Villanova (60). The men placed fourth (122 points) behind Princeton (57), Navy (109) and Villanova (115). Green and freshman Martha MacDonald (Toronto, Ont./Havergal College) are each guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Championships based on their individual finishes.

Georgetown Men's Recap (4th of 26, 109 points)
Green's championship performance led the Hoyas to a fourth-place finish in the 26-team field. It was a familiar story to have Green be the low stick for the Hoyas as it is his second-consecutive win of the season following his BIG EAST individual title two weeks ago. It was the rest of the Hoya squad that had a tougher day, touting a spread just shy of 30 seconds among the remaining point scorers.

"Jon Green ran a very smart race to earn his first regional title," Head Men's Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey. "He closed very fast and is ready to run with the best athletes in the NCAA. I'm extremely disappointed in how our team performed. We need to look in the mirror and figure out what went wrong. This is a talented group and I'm confident we will rebound and have a great rest of the year."

Green's title is the eighth in program history.

Georgetown Women's Recap (3rd of 28, 88 points)
MacDonald ran an incredibly smart race to take ninth overall and help the Hoyas to a third-place team finish. The freshman was one of a trio of first years to finish among the top 10 at the race as she clocked 20:18.4 over the 6-kilometer course. Graduate student Meredith Rizzo (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville/Yale), also a newcomer to the Hoya squad this season, was the second finisher on the team as she finished 22nd overall. A strong pack-running squad, the team looked to MacDonald for the low stick and managed a 10.3-second spread among the remaining point scorers.

"Martha MacDonald had a great day today and this young team has a bright future," Director of Track & Field Julie Culley said. "Martha wanted to finish top 10 and she fought hard for her ninth-place finish. We had a race plan for the team going in to this meet to ensure we were one of the top two teams and we just didn't put ourselves in a position to be successful. We are very excited for Martha and to see what she can do as an individual at NCAAs in a week."
