Green Finishes 10th at NCAA Cross Country Championships

Nov. 18, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John's School) capped a sensational cross country season with a 10th-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships, held at the EP "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Green, already an All-American in the sport from the 2015 season, earned the second All-America honor in cross country of his career. On the women's side, freshman Martha MacDonald (Toronto, Ont./Havergal College) also competed as an individual in the women's race.

"Another phenomenal performance by Jon Green finishing 10th," Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Julie Culley said. "He fought so hard for that spot over the last 1,000 meters and earned every step of his 10th-place showing. Martha ran a gutsy race. She got out really well on a course that is hard to maneuver, but she wasn't 100 percent and that made the second half really difficult. Racing this meet as a freshman is extremely encouraging and she will be a force in the coming years."

Green, no stranger to elite levels of competition, was in the mix from the beginning of the race and kept himself in good position through 8,000 meters. Clocking 29:38.6 over the 10-kilometer competition, it was over the final two kilometers of the race that the All-American moved up five spots to take 10th place overall. It is the second-best nationals finish of Green's career as he finished fifth overall in 2015.

"Jon executed his race plan to perfection," Head Men's Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey said. "It was the most patient and tough race he's ever run. It was extremely windy and because of that I wanted him tucked in with the back. He was hurting really bad with two kilometers to go but stayed tough and was able to outkick some great athletes to finish 10th. He had a rough fall last year so this was great redemption. He has set himself up to have a great year on the track."

With Green's performance, the men's cross country team has put a runner among the top 10 individually in each of the last three years with Green's 2015 showing (5th), All-American Scott Carpenter's (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) 10th-place finish in 2016 and Green's 10th place showing today. Three-consecutive years of top-10 performances is a first in program history. Green's performance marks the 12th time in history a Hoya has finished among the top 10 at the national championship meet.

In the women's race, MacDonald, a freshman, finished 168th overall, clocking 21:14.2 over the 6-kilometer stanza. She was the 16th finisher among those in their freshman year of eligibility.

The Hoyas will take the rest of the month off and open the indoor season at the U.S. Naval Academy in December. The men's team will open the season at the Navy Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 2. The women's team will start competition on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Navy Lid Lifter.
