WASHINGTON - Junior Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) and Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) were named the BIG EAST Female and Male Track Athletes of the Week. The conference honors were announced on Tuesday.
Infeld broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run by more than six seconds on Friday at the BU Valentine invitational. She finished first with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:00.13. The time is the second-best in the nation for the indoor season.
This is the second time this season Infeld has earned BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week honors. She was also named BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week on January 31 after anchoring the distance medley relay on January 28 at the Penn State National Meet. The relay squad set a new facility record at the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track and a new school record for Georgetown with a time of 10:55.95. Infeld's split of 4:33.2 as the 1,600-meter anchor helped earn the distance medley relay team an NCAA automatic qualifying mark for NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships to be held in Nampa, Idaho on March 9-10.
Springer ran to an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 7:53.69 at the Washington Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Springer qualified for BIG EAST postseason competition as well as the IC4A Championships. His time is the 17th-best time nationally so far this season.
The Blue & Gray continues competition at the BIG EAST Championships on February 18-19 held at the Armory in New York City.
