WASHINGTON - After an indoor season of hard work and preparation, the Georgetown University track & field team will travel to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for BIG EAST Championships this weekend. The Georgetown women will be looking to defend their 2012 BIG EAST championship title and the men are primed to make a run for a championship as well. The Hoyas re-wrote the record books this season, with several top-10 all-time performances on both the men's and women's sides and look to extend that success into the postseason.

The Hoya men look to improve on an eighth-place finish at last year's BIG EAST Championships and will use a full team effort to do so. The men's 3000-meter event on Sunday includes some of the Hoyas' best distance runners. Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly High School) and Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) ran record-setting races in the 5,000-meter event at last weekend's Husky Invitational, posting the fourth (13:51.72) and seventh (13:54.68) fastest times in program history. They were the two fastest times in the BIG EAST this season. Springer finished second in the event at last year's BIG EAST Championships. Collin Leibold (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) and Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellum), who has the quickest 3,000-meter time for Georgetown this season, are running the event as well.

Sprinter Devante Washington (Lafayette, La./Lafayette) will run the 60-meter dash and hope to improve on an already fast time of 6.89 seconds this season, which is eighth-fastest in the BIG EAST and good for the sixth-fastest in program history. Tyler Smith (Jeffersonville, Pa./Norristown) will also be running in the 60-meter dash.

The women's team has also seen some impressive times this season as they set out to defend their title. All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) will compete in the 1,000-meter run this weekend and had some very impressive times of her own this season. She set a school record in the 1,000-meter at the Penn State Invitational (2:43.34) which was also fastest in the BIG EAST. Her mile run at the Armory Collegiate Invitational was good for fourth in program history. Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillps Exeter Academy) is right behind Schneider, setting the fifth-fastest mile time in program history this season and also setting the second-fastest 3,000-meter run at last weekend's Husky Invitational in a time of 9:04.85. Her time is also fastest in the BIG EAST this season. Coogan can be seen running both events this weekend.

Deseree King (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) has the fastest BIG EAST time this season in the 500-meter run (1:12.75), done at the Penn State Invitational. She will be running in the 500-meter event and the 4x400-meter relay this weekend.

All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) was another BIG EAST leader this year, posting the fastest time in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:06.51. Chelsea will join King in the 4x400-meter relay and run in the 800-meter event.

The first event is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. on Saturday with competition running throughout the weekend. Live coverage and other championship information can be viewed at the BIG EAST's Championships Central.
