Coogan and Hollenebeck Named BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athletes

All-American Katrina Coogan

Feb. 20, 2015

WASHINGTON - Georgetown seniors Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) of the cross country/track & field team and Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) of the baseball team have been named the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners.

Coogan, a human science major, won the BIG EAST Championship and Mid-Atlantic Region individual titles, both times leading her squad to the team title. For her efforts, the All-American was named the Mid-Atlantic Region's Female Athlete of the Year, the first time a Hoya has earned the distinction since 2007. She was named an All-American following a 16th-place performance at the NCAA Championships en route to a fourth-place podium finish for the Blue & Gray. The senior middle distance runner has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) all-academic teams in both cross country and track & field all three years on the Hilltop.

When not training nor studying, Coogan finds time to participate in community service activities with her team. Before the holiday season, the team participated in Operation Christmas Child, a week-long effort with the track & field / cross country program where the team spent their time decorating and filling shoeboxes. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world.

Hollenbeck, a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection in 2015, had a strong campaign for the Hoyas last season, both as a starter and out of the bullpen. The southpaw made 18 appearances on the mound, compiling a 5-2 record and a 3.18 ERA. He led the pitching staff in ERA, tied for the team lead in wins and finished second with 50 strikeouts.

Off of the diamond, Hollenbeck, an accounting major, has been named a BIG EAST Academic All-Star in each of his first three years. He helped organize a group of Hoya baseball players to volunteer at DC Central Kitchen, helping prepare meals for D.C. public school lunches and prepare food for the Capital Food Fight, a cook-off between local chefs to raise funds for the DC Central Kitchen.

As the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners, both Coogan and Hollenbeck will receive $2,000 scholarships.
