Ahmed Bile

April 12, 2016

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University track & field All-Americans Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) and Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) were named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s and Men’s Track Athletes of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday. The honor comes after the Hoyas competed at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, held at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla., on Saturday.

The league accolade marks the third time this track & field season that the Hoyas have swept the conference weekly track honors, previously sweeping on Feb. 9 (Bile and Southerland) and Feb. 3 (Andrea Keklak and Joe White).

Southerland earns the honor following her win in the women’s 1,500-meter run on Saturday as she led a trio of Hoyas to the top three spots. Southerland tops the BIG EAST Conference with a time of 4:21.51, a new personal record (PR) for the junior half miler. The time ranks 12th in the NCAA’s East Division and 38th nationally.

This is Southerland’s fourth overall honor of her career from the BIG EAST Conference and the first outdoor recognition, previously earning the nod during the 2016 indoor season on Feb. 9 and Dec. 8 and during the 2015 indoor campaign (Feb. 25).

Bile is recognized for his efforts in the 800-meter run, where he ran a PR 1:48.48. His time is the best in the BIG EAST and ranks 13th in the NCAA’s East Division and 22nd nationally. Bile’s time showcases the senior’s range as he is among the nation’s best in various events, previously competing at the NCAA indoor national championship in the 3,000-meter run and the mile. Bile is part of an elite group of runners at Georgetown to run a sub-four mile, a feat he has accomplished four times in his career, the only Hoya to achieve that feat.

This is the second BIG EAST weekly award for Bile as he previously earned the nod during the indoor season on Feb. 9

The Hoyas return to the track on April 22-23 as they split sites between the Stanford Twilight Meet (Palo Alto, Calif.) on Friday, April 22 and the UVA Challenge (Charlottesville, Va.), a two-day meet at the University of Virginia.
