WASHINGTON - Georgetown track & field All-American Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) was named the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office in New York on Tuesday evening. The honor is the first for the freshman and is the first time a Hoya has received recognition from the conference this outdoor season.
Due to the number of BIG EAST institutions competing over the last two weekends, the award encompassed competition from the previous two weekends. White earns the honor after a sixth-place performance in the men's 800-meter run at the Florida Relays on Friday, April 3. White's time of 1:47.57 leads the BIG EAST Conference this season and is currently the 10th-fastest time in the country.
White's debut performance was especially impressive within the friendly confines of the Hilltop as it is the 11th-fastest time in program history, just shy of peak performances from Hoya standouts such as NCAA champions and All-Americans Ethan Frey (1:47.21, 9th) and Steve Holman (1:47.54, 10th).
The Hoyas will travel to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16-18 as well as the Larry Ellis Invitational (Princeton, N.J.) and the Virginia Challenge (Charlottesville, Va.) on April 17-18.
