Georgetown University track & field All-American Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) was named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, on Wednesday. The honor comes after the Hoyas competed at the 2016 Penn Relays, held at historic Franklin Field (Philadelphia, Pa.) and the women’s team brought two wheels back to the Hilltop, capturing the distance medley relay (DMR) and 4x800-meter titles.
Southerland earns the honor after she competed on both winning relay squads at the Penn Relays. Southerland ran the 800-meter leg of the DMR, completing the fastest two-lap split (2:05.22) and handing the baton to All-American anchor Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) with a commanding lead. Southerland returned two days later to compete on the 4x800-meter relay, running the second leg with the third-fastest split of the frame.
With Saturday’s win, the Hoyas successfully completed a distance double at Penn Relays for just the second time in program history. The only other time GU completed a distance double was during the 1996 season when the Hoyas won the DMR and the 4x800-meter relay.
This is Southerland’s fifth overall honor of her career from the BIG EAST Conference and the second outdoor recognition, previously earning the nod on April 26. She’s tallied a trio of indoor honors, previously earning the acknowledgment during the 2016 indoor season on Feb. 9 and Dec. 8 and during the 2015 indoor campaign (Feb. 25).
The Hoyas will return to action on Friday, May 6 as they stay in the DMV for the Kehoe Twilight Meet, hosted by the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
