Men’s Track & Field / Cross Country Finishes Sixth in Program of the Year Standings

June 13, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men’s track & field / cross country program finishes the year in sixth place in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I John McDonnell Program of the Year Award standings, as announced by the coaches association on Tuesday. The updated standings were announced following the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships that saw the Hoya men tie for 12th place (18 points), the best team finish since 1991 behind a trio of top-five performances. The Hoya men picked up three First Team All-America distinctions in a pair of events.

“Congratulations to our entire men's team and staff on achieving this incredible honor,” Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Julie Culley said. “The individuals who competed at the NCAA championships in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field should be recognized for their outstanding achievement and incredible team finishes. A select number of men were able to compete for Georgetown at each of these championships, but it was an entire team effort to get those men to the starting line. We are so proud of what they have accomplished this year and I want to thank our coaches, especially Coach Brandon Bonsey, for leading the men to this sixth-place ranking.”

The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Championships. In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field, with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.

Of the 18 schools eligible following the academic year, the Blue & Gray finished sixth with 51.5 points, following a 21st-place showing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships and the 12th-place performance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Georgetown is the lone BIG EAST Conference school among the institutions considered for program of the year.

The Pac-12 leads the way with four schools in consideration for program of the year, followed by the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC with a pair apiece and the American, BIG EAST, Big Sky, Conference USA, MAAC and Mountain West each with one school in the final standings.
