Seven from Men's Track & Field Named All-Academic by USTFCCCA

July 24, 2012

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men's track & field team had nine student-athletes named All-Academic by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today. The seven athletes make the list of 431 total from 148 different NCAA Division I institutions. Seven is the highest tally of all BIG EAST Conference institutions on the list - with the conference receiving a nod from 10 schools currently representing the league.

USTFCCCA names a student-athlete all-academic if they currently carry a 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA) through the most recent semester with the athlete also having competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (preliminary or final site) and / or finished the regular season (indoor) in the national top 96 as an individual athlete or in the national top 48 as part of a relay.

Georgetown topped all schools from the BIG EAST Conference with seven nods to the Division I All-Academic team followed by Notre Dame (6), Villanova (4), DePaul (3), Louisville (3), Cincinnati (2) and Connecticut, Marquette, Providence and Rutgers all placing one on the list.

All-American Mark Dennin (Gilberstville, Pa./Boyertown) earned his first All-America nod in the spring, earning second team honors following his season-best and career PR performance in the men's 10,000-meter finals at the NCAA Championships. Also competing in that final, Alex Lundy (Littleton, Colo./Heritage/Maryland) joins Dennin in earning All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA.

With the honors going to those who participate in the NCAA Outdoor Championships including preliminary sites, another five join Dennin and Lundy on the All-Academic team.

Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) reached the NCAA Championships in the men's 5,000 meter and ran 14:18.85 in the semifinals of the event to appear on the all-academic list.

T.C. Lumbar (Edina, Minn./Edina) ran in both the 10,000 and the 5,000-meter semifinals at the east preliminary championships while also working on his master's in journalism in the School of Continuing Studies.

Toby Ulm (Marlborough, United Kingdom/St. John's School & Community College) finished his career on the Hilltop running 50.89 in the 400-meter hurdles and getting edged out of a trip to Des Moines for the final site of the NCAA Championships by place rather than time. It was a season best for Ulm.

Matt Howard (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) competed in the east preliminary site of the NCAA Championships, running a career-best 9:09.76 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while also earning all-academic honors.

Kevin Wilson (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstowne/George Mason) competed in the 400-meter quarterfinals to make the all-academic list while working on his master's in liberal studies on the Hilltop.
