WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men’s cross country team has been tabbed No. 7 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason poll. The women’s team is ranked No. 19 in the coaches association preseason poll. The Hoyas open the 2016 season at the 2016 Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Club Invitational on Saturday, September 10 in State College, Pa.
“I am very excited about the potential of the men's team this fall. We return six of the seven men that ran at the NCAA meet last fall and add in some great new pieces including returning All-American Michael Clevenger.” Head Men’s Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey said. “We are not focused on rankings. We are focused on the process of getting better every day. It's nice to know that the coaches around the country respect us, but we are focused on executing on a daily and weekly basis. This is a fun group to work with and I'm excited to get the season started on Saturday.”
A year after the men’s team finished 10th at nationals and Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s) finished fifth individually, the best finish for a Hoya since 2000 (Franklyn Sanchez, 5th), the Hoyas find themselves ranked No. 7 nationally by the coaches association with 266 points. They trail 2015 NCAA champion Syracuse (359), Oregon (339), Northern Arizona (324), Stanford (323), Colorado (308) and Arkansas (305). They enter the season tabbed No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic region as well.
The Blue & Gray is one of two BIG EAST schools to appear in the preseason poll as the Providence College Friars are tabbed preseason No. 21.
Green has been selected No. 5 in the 2016 Saucony Flo50 Men’s Individual Rankings while the team is ranked preseason No. 5 in the FloTrack team rankings.
“Jon put in a great summer of training and came back to campus very fit,” Bonsey continued. “He's one of the best distance runners in the country and deserves all the attention he is receiving. He's been working really hard with the men he trains with on a daily basis. We have a group training right with him and I'm excited to see how all of this plays out. We will probably wait a meet or two to race Jon to keep him fresh for the postseason.”
With 149 points, the GU women garnered the No. 19 preseason USTFCCCA ranking. The Hoyas are the lone BIG EAST team represented in the coaches association preseason poll.
The women make an appearance at No. 2 in the USTFCCCA preseason Mid-Atlantic region rankings, behind Penn State. The 2016 Saucony Flo50 Women’s Team Rankings features the Georgetown women at No. 14 preseason.
Both teams will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Club Invitational, hosted by Penn State in State College, Pa. The women’s college six-kilometer course is slated for 10 a.m. The men’s 5.2-mile course begins at 10:45 a.m.
