Sept. 13, 2016
WASHINGTON - Christian Alvarado (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) was named the BIG EAST Conference’s Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office. The honor comes the same day that the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its week one rankings. The men stayed at No. 7 while the women moved up to No. 18.
Alvarado earns the honor after he finished fourth overall at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Club Invitational, hosted by Penn State University, on Saturday. He clocked 26:31.6 over the 5.2-mile course, helping the Hoyas to a third-place showing. He finished fourth behind three Syracuse runners, including a pair of All-Americans.
The Hoyas totaled 90 points to finish third behind 2015 NCAA Champion and No. 1 Syracuse (19) and Cornell (67). Lehigh (125) and host Penn State (146) rounded out the top five in the 10-team field.
This is the first weekly honor from the conference for Alvarado across all three seasons. It is GU’s first honor of the 2016 cross country season.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, October 1 when both teams compete at the Paul Short Run, held in Bethlehem, Pa., and hosted by Lehigh University.
