Sept. 15, 2015

WASHINGTON - Georgetown track & field legend Al Blozis (C’42) is part of the 42nd National Track & Field Hall of Fame induction class, as announced today by USA Track & Field (USATF) offices in Indianapolis. Blozis is part of a six-person induction class that features two modern athletes, three veteran athletes and one coach.

During his time on the Hilltop, Blozis was a two-sport athlete competing in track & field as well as football. Blozis was a two-time national champion, winning the shot put at back-to-back NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 1940 and 1941, as well as a two-time Penn Relays champion in the event, winning in 1940 and 1942. The two-time All-American was a nine-time IC4A champion with three apiece in the shot put at the indoor and out championships, as well as an additional three in the discus at the outdoor championships.

Blozis set a then-world record in the indoor shot put with a throw of 17.61 meters (57’ ¾”). He is inducted in the Georgetown Hall of Fame as both a football and men’s track & field athlete.

On the football field, Blozis was an All-American in 1941 and was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. He led the Hoyas to the 1941 Orange Bowl.

With the cancellation of the 1940 Munich Games, Blozis missed his chance of making an Olympic team, but he went on to continue his career in football as he played in the NFL for the New York Giants, achieving All-Pro status as a tackle.

Blozis’ life was cut short by World War II. Sadly, Lieutenant Blozis was killed in action on January 21, 1945, in Belgium.

Blozis is inducted along with modern athletes Allen Johnson and Hollis Conway, veteran athletes Ralph Mann and Jack Torrance and coach Harry Gill. The group will be honored on Thursday, Oct. 29 at the USATF Black Tie & Sneakers Gala, hosted at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.
