WASHINGTON - Scott Carpenter (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) was named the BIG EAST Conference’s Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office. It is the second honor for Carpenter this season as well as his career. The honor comes after the Hoyas finished 14th of 30 teams at the 2016 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday with 399 points. The stacked field featured 19 teams ranked by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Carpenter, an All-American in the steeplechase, led the Blue & Gray as he finished 13th overall with a time of 24:07.0 in the 8-kilometer race. Proving again to be among the nation’s best, Carpenter was the top finisher from all schools in both the BIG EAST Conference as well as the Mid-Atlantic Region.
This is the second weekly honor from the conference for Carpenter in cross country. It is GU’s third accolade of the 2016 cross country season as Carpenter previously earned the honor on Oct. 4 and Christian Alvarado (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) garnered the award on Sept. 13.
In the latest USTFCCCA rankings, the Hoya men were tabbed No. 23 nationally and remain atop the Mid-Atlantic region.
The Hoyas return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 at the BIG EAST Championships, held at historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The conference championship returns to New York City for the first time since 2012. Of the GU men’s seven BIG EAST cross country team titles, three have been won at the historic venue, as well as four of the women’s five team crowns.
