WASHINGTON - Georgetown junior Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s High School) was named the BIG EAST Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Green’s honor comes after the 2015 NCAA Pre-National Meet, held at the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky., where he competed in the seeded 8,000-meter race.
Green placed sixth individually with a time of 23:28.7 to provide the low stick for the Hoyas as the Blue & Gray finished fifth overall with 217 points (6 / 19 / 48 / 70 / 71). Georgetown finished fifth behind No. 1 Colorado (89), No. 3 Oregon (151), then-No. T13 Arkansas (164) and then-No. T13. UTEP (197).
Green’s sixth-place showing did not lack in drama as the junior, competing in just his second season of cross country on the Hilltop, fell at the 6,000-meter mark, got stepped on and still managed to get back up to finish strong.
This was the best individual finish for a GU men’s athlete at the Pre-National meet since the 2006 season when former Hoya All-American Andrew Bumbalough finished 12th.
The Hoya men still hold the top spot in the Mid-Atlantic region and are now No. 14 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll. The Georgetown women are now No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic region after a seventh-place showing at the Pre-National meet and are ranked No. 18 in the latest coaches poll.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the BIG EAST Championships, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31 in Mason, Ohio, followed up by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, slated Friday, Nov. 13, in Princeton, N.J.
