Oct. 21, 2014 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University cross country standout and track All-American Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) was honored as the BIG EAST Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office today. This is Coogan's second honor of the season as she previously earned the recognition on September 23.
Coogan earned the award following a third-place showing at the 2014 Indiana State University Pre-National Meet, held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The event served as a precursor to the 2014 NCAA Championships and gave participants the chance to preview the championship course before nationals.
Coogan's time of 20:37.7 over the 6,000-meter course led the Hoyas to a team championship for the second-consecutive year as the Hoyas tallied 110 points in the 43-team field. Coogan was one of three members of the Blue & Gray to finish among the top 20, a feat only accomplished by Georgetown.
"I was really happy with my race this weekend," Coogan said. "We were really focusing on trying to race Michigan and Oregon. The way the race turned out, I was running against a girl from Michigan and I was really focused on beating her to contribute the best I could to the team effort."
The Hoya women moved up in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, the last regular poll of the season, to No. 2 from No. 4 last week. On the men's side, a previously unranked Hoya squad propelled back on to the national scene with a third-place finish at the Pre-National Meet, moving up to No. 16 in the national rankings released today and up to No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Georgetown returns to action on Friday, October 31 at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, hosted by Butler University at Northview Church in Indianapolis, Ind.
