Georgetown Cross Country Set for Mid-Atlantic Regionals

Nov. 9, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University cross country teams are both in Bethlehem, Pa., for the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships, a 6-kilometer course for the women and the first 10-kilometer test for the men this season. The Georgetown men are looking for their second three-peat of the season having won the last three BIG EAST titles and are in the hunt for a third-consecutive Mid-Atlantic region title. The women’s race starts at 10:45 a.m. ET and the men’s race starts at 11:45 a.m. ET.

“The postseason is what we gear all of our training toward,” Head Men’s Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey said. “We did a solid job at the BIG EAST meet and now we have to be better than that tomorrow at the regional meet. The team has come together very well the last couple weeks and I’m confident that we will see the best version of this group. We will add Spencer Brown back in who did not run at the conference meet. He’s consistently been our number two runner so that is a big help.”

The men’s team goes into the championship as the top-ranked team from the region and the two-time reigning Mid-Atlantic champions. They are coming off a championship performance at the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, the third-straight team title and All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s School) took the individual tile. Green became the first Hoya to win the individual race since Andrew Bumbalough in 2008.

“The women's team is ranked third heading into this meet,” Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Julie Culley. “But we are coming in ready to race for an automatic spot to the NCAA finals. We have stayed healthy this entire season and have built momentum week-over-week. We are the strongest we've been, both mentally and physically, heading into regionals. Everything we do angles toward this meet and we are ready to roll.”

The women’s team was in the mix with two of the best teams in the country two weeks ago at the BIG EAST Championships as No. 9 Villanova pushed past No. 10 Providence for the team title. The Hoyas finished third, with all five point scorers among the top 15.

The top two teams from each regional championship will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. A total of 31 teams compete as a team at the NCAA Championships with 18 teams earning the auto bid with another 13 receiving an at-large bid.
