Hoyas Drop BIG EAST Contest to No. 12/4 Fighting Irish
Jan. 10, 2009
South Bend, Ind. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost its first BIG EAST game of the season to the No. 12/4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (14-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) Saturday evening in South Bend, Ind. The Hoyas stayed close in the first and early in the second but just couldn't overpower the nationally-ranked squad falling 84-63. With the loss Georgetown falls to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
It was a pair of freshmen that kept the Hoyas in the game in the first half. After a pair of outstanding performances against Syracuse, Morgan Williams (Dickinson, Texas/Dickinson) and Tia McBride (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) both came in and scored to keep GU alive early on. Williams hit a three and a free throw in the opening seven minutes while McBride followed with three straight jumpers. Another trey from Williams at the eight-minute mark made it 23-13 as GU battled down low to keep it close.
The Georgetown defense didn't allow a field goal for a two-minute span but gave up six free throws as the Fighting Irish were hot at the line. On the offensive end, the Hoyas began to get a head of steam with a three and jumper from Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and another shot from McBride. McNutt then ran the floor and added a wide open layup as the defense continued to produce stops making the score 32-25 at the break.
McBride and McNutt led the Hoyas in the first with eight while Williams added seven points and a team-best five rebounds. The Hoyas shot just 29 percent in the first half and allowed UND to hit 40 percent from the field. In the paint, Georgetown was outrebounded 24-16 but the tough GU defense forced 14 Irish turnovers. Free throws proved to be a key in the half as Notre Dame shot 83.3 percent from the line while Georgetown shot 50 percent.
Georgetown cut the deficit to five to open the half but struggled to defend down low as UND began to hit. A 12-2 run from the Irish put the Hoyas in 17-point hole. Georgetown slowly started to dig out with a pair of free throws from Latia Magee (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) and forcing turnovers on defense but the squad had an uphill battle.
As the Hoyas crashed the boards and drew fouls, the squad earned the bonus early and capitalized on free throw opportunities. Unfortunately, UND still managed to score keeping the lead in double-digits. GU cut it to 12 late in the half but that would be as close as they would get as the squad fell 84-63.
McNutt led the Hoyas with 16 points while Williams added 14. Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) posted a team-best seven rebounds while Williams and Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) each had five. Georgetown was outrebounded 40-33 and shot 31.7 percent from the field. The Hoyas forced 23 UND turnovers while committing 18.
The Hoyas will have just two day's rest before traveling to New York to face St. John's on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS College Sports as the BIG EAST Game of the Week. Live stats and a pay-per-view broadcast of the game will be available on www.GUHoyas.com.
