QUEENS, N.Y. - The Georgetown University women’s basketball team fell to the St. John’s University Red Storm (11-7, 4-3 BIG EAST), 64-41, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Friday evening at Carnesecca Arena. With the loss the Hoyas fall to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. She was followed by senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Virginia) who tallied 12 points in the contest. Senior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) led the squad with 10 rebounds and added two steals and a block.
The Hoyas were outrebounded, 40-31, but forced St. John’s into 18 turnovers while committing 15. Georgetown shot 27.3 percent (15-of-55) from the field, and allowed 43.4 percent (23-of-53) shooting, including seven 3-pointers, from St. John’s.
The Red Storm jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, but buckets down low from Petke and Belk cut it to two, 8-6. The Johnnies answered right back with a jumper and a layup forcing a Hoya timeout. Fouls hindered the Georgetown efforts as St. John’s ended the first quarter leading, 17-6.
The Hoyas ran off a quick 9-0 run to begin the second quarter with five points from White to cut the lead to two, 17-15. It started with a basket from sophomore guard Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and ended with a defensive rebound and layup in transition from White. St. John’s ended the momentum with a trey and regained a quick lead hitting from downtown. A foul in the final second of play gave the Red Storm three free throws and Georgetown went into the half trailing, 33-18.
St. John’s controlled the pace early in the third stanza taking the 17-point lead on two separate occasions. White and Venson combined for back-to-back scores to cut it to 13, 40-27, late in the third and force a Red Storm timeout.
With the Johnnies leading by 17, a jump ball turned into a small skirmish under the basket. Technicals were assessed and the teams regrouped for the final minute of play in the third. St. John’s led, 46-29, at the end of the third.
The Hoyas would continue to battle, but were never really able to mount a comeback as the squad eventually fell, 64-41.
Georgetown will be back in action on Sunday at Seton Hall for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Pirates. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Dave Popkin and Ralph Bednarczyk calling the action. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
