WASHINGTON - Senior guard Samisha Powell (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scored 13 points and the Georgetown University women's basketball team (9-18, 3-12 BIG EAST) came from behind to upset the No. 22/RV St. John's University Red Storm (19-6, 12-2 BIG EAST), 60-57, Tuesday night at McDonough Arena. The win snapped the Red Storm's 11-game winning streak and marked the first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 11, 2012.
"We're getting better," said Georgetown Head Coach Jim Lewis. "St. John's is obviously having an excellent season coming in in first place in the BIG EAST, but we played them well up there so we've gotten better and we can continue to get better."
Freshman guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) and sophomore guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) each scored 12 points and freshman center Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) added 14 rebounds for the Hoyas.
Georgetown outrebounded St. John's, 36-30, and shot 46.2 percent from the field.
Amber Thompson scored 14 points and Aliyyah Handford and Briana Brown each added 13 for the Red Storm, who hadn't lost since Jan. 5 at Xavier. The Red Storm shot just 29 percent in the decisive second half.
St. John's led by three just minutes into the second half, but a 12-2 Georgetown run including six points from Woodard gave the Hoyas a 44-37 lead with 11:53 remaining in the contest.
From that point on, GU held onto the lead keeping it a two-possession game. With 1:16 left and Georgetown leading by seven, St. John's staged a 6-0 run to cut it to one with 22 seconds on the clock. Sophomore guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) made two free throws and the Red Storm's game-tying 3-pointer bounced off the back rim allowing the Blue & Gray to hold on for the 60-57 victory.
St. John's led for the entire first, going ahead by as much as 10 points late in the half. Looking at a 27-17 deficit with 4:26 before the break, a 6-0 run cut it to four and a late layup from Powell made it 31-29 going into the break.
"We had great contributions throughout the lineup tonight, Logan Battle and Samisha Powell were really good, and everyone was good," said Lewis. "We controlled what we could. They got away from us a few times in transition buckets and offensive penetration, but once we corrected that we looked good. I have to say that our coaching staff did a great job tonight, it was an outstanding collective effort."
The Hoyas will be back in action on Sunday at Villanova at 1 p.m. The game will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 and live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
