WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (6-9, 0-3 BIG EAST) will host the Butler University Bulldogs in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Saturday at 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena. Saturday is also Junior Hoyas Day where all kids eighth grade and younger receive free admission and there will be a post-game autograph session.
The Hoyas fell at Xavier University in their last contest, 85-68. Senior forward Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) led the Blue & Gray with 16 points, while freshman forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) added 13. Freshman center Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) tallied her 11th double-double of the year with 14 points and an game-high 20 rebounds as well as four blocks, a team-best three assists and one steal.
On Monday, Butler won the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week award and White was named to the weekly honor roll.
Butler maintained her spot as the league's top rebounder following a pair of double-doubles last week. Against Creighton on Wednesday, Butler scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds before scoring 12 points and corralling 12 boards against Marquette on Saturday. For the week, the freshman averaged 18 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots.
For the season, Butler is the top scoring freshman at 15.0 points per game and leads all BIG EAST players with a 13.2 rebounding average. She is sixth in the nation in rebounding average, as well as the top freshman in the country, and ranks eighth overall including first among freshmen in national double-doubles with 11 on the season.
White tallied a double-double of 22 points, 11 rebounds against Marquette on Saturday en route to averaging 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds for the week.
Leading the way for the Hoyas is Butler with 15.0 ppg as well as a BIG EAST-leading 13.2 rpg. White is second with 14.7 ppg as well as 8.7 rpg and sophomore guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) rounds out those in double figures with 10.7 ppg.
The team is outrebounding opponents by 8.5 rpg and shooting 41.4 percent on the season from the field.
A two-point halftime lead didn't hold up on Wednesday night as the Villanova Wildcats came back with a strong effort in the final 20 minutes of action to defeat Butler (7-8, 2-2 BIG EAST) by the final score of 70-48. The Bulldogs shot 52 percent in the opening half, but were limited to just four field goals in the second stanza.
Haley Howard was the only Bulldog to reach a double figure scoring total as Liz Stratman, Ijeoma Uchendu and Taylor Schippers were all close with nine, eight and seven points respectively.
This will be the first meeting between the squads.
