Jan. 13, 2014
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (7-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) earned two BIG EAST Conference weekly honors on Monday as freshman center Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) won the Rookie of the Week award and senior forward Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) was named to the weekly honor roll.
Butler averaged 14.5 points, 17.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 blocks in a 1-1 week for the Hoyas. The rookie center reached the 20-rebound mark for the second time this season with 20 caroms at Xavier on Wednesday night. Butler notched a double-double in both games last week, shooting 40 percent from the floor.
Her six BIG EAST Freshman of the Week certificates put her in a nine-way tie for fourth-most in conference history, a list which includes former Hoya Rebekkah Brunson (2000-01). The league record of 10 newcomer awards is held by Connecticut's Maya Moore (2007-08).
This is her sixth Rookie of the Week award this season and seventh honor overall.
White averaged 20.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in a last week for the Hoyas. She notched a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds in Georgetown's first BIG EAST win of the season against Butler (85-79) on Saturday afternoon as the Hoyas registered their highest point total against a league foe since January 2009.
This is third nod to the honor roll this season and fourth award this year overall. White has earned four spots on the honor roll in her career.
Georgetown has won seven BIG EAST awards so far this year and also had five nods to the honor roll.
The Hoyas will have a quick turnaround after Saturday's game traveling to Providence, R.I, to face Providence College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available through the Friars' athletic website.
