WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will travel to Rutgers University on Tuesday for a BIG EAST Conference matchup with the Scarlet Knights at the RAC. The Hoyas are currently 11-7 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST Conference play. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network with Brent Stover and Debbie Antonelli calling the action.
On Monday, junior forward Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She helped Georgetown go 1-1 with back-to-back double-doubles averaging 16.0 ppg as well as 11.0 rpg with six assists and four blocks shooting 55 percent from the field. The two double-doubles were the first two of her career. It was also White's first weekly award of her career.
In its last outing, Georgetown got back on the winning track with a 70-50 victory over the Seton Hall University Pirates on Saturday afternoon. Senior shooting guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) and White both managed double-doubles as the Hoyas used a 38-22 score in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Rodgers led the way with 24 points and 10 boards, while White added 18 points and 10 rebounds. It marked Rodgers' ninth-career double-double and the third of the season, as well as White's second of her career with the first coming a game ago. Sophomore forward Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) added 15 points, seven boards and five steals. Rodgers led the team in assists with seven while also hitting six 3-pointers in the contest.
Georgetown shot 43.1 percent from the field for the game and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc while forcing 19 Pirate turnovers on 11 steals and outrebounding SHU, 45-31.
Currently leading the way for the Hoyas is Rodgers. The shooting guard is averaging 24.6 ppg and 7.7 rpg as well as posting 64 steals and 64 assists. White is second with 11.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg, while senior center Sydney Wilson (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) rounds out the top three with 6.9 ppg as well as 5.2 rpg. Junior guard Samisha Powell (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) is averaging 6.2 ppg and has 54 assists on the season.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off their first BIG EAST victory of the season, an 87-61 win over Providence last Wednesday at the RAC. The victory over the Friars upped RU's overall record to 10-7 and snapped a three-game conference skid to improve to 1-3 in league play.
Senior guard Erica Wheeler leads RU at 10.8 ppg. She has poured in double figures the last seven consecutive games, including a team-high 17 points last Sunday at #2/3 Notre Dame and 14 against Providence. Senior Monique Oliver is second on the stat sheet at 10.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Betnijah Laney is third on the team at 8.9 ppg along with 4.2 rpg. Fifth-year senior Chelsey Lee meanwhile leads the Knights on the boards averaging a team-best 4.9 rpg.
Georgetown is 4-17 all-time against the Scarlet Knights and have won two of the last four meetings, both wins coming at home. The Hoyas won a season ago, 54-36, at McDonough Arena as Tia Magee scored 21 points and Rodgers added 19. In the last meeting at the RAC, GU fell by a score of 70-53. Georgetown is 2-7 all-time at Rutgers.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at the RAC. The game will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network with Brent Stover and Debbie Antonelli announcing the game. Live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
