Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad has earned the No. 10 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament which is a single-elimination championship beginning Friday in Hartford, Conn. The Hoyas finished the season 17-12 and 7-9 in BIG EAST play to earn the position in the bracket. GU will face No. 15 Seton Hall (16-13, 4-12 BIG EAST) in the first round game on Friday at 6 p.m.

Georgetown has won four of its last six conference games but will face a familiar foe in Seton Hall who defeated the Hoyas in the regular season finale on Monday evening, 64-54. In that game, Georgetown struggled from the floor and had a tough stretch in the second half after cutting the deficit to three early on.

The Hoyas are currently led by senior guard Karee Houlette (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs) who is averaging 10.5 ppg and 13.4 ppg in BIG EAST play. Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) is Georgetown's second leading scorer averaging 9.9 ppg and 5.1 rpg. GU holds a 3.1 rebounding margin over opponents and is averaging 9.8 steals per game.

This season marks Georgetown's first trip to the BIG EAST Tournament since 2004-05, Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy's first season on the Hilltop. In that year the Hoyas entered as the No. 6 seed but fell to Syracuse at No. 11.

The last time Georgetown was the 10th seed was 1995-96 when GU faced seventh-seeded Seton Hall but fell 74-58. All-time, Georgetown is 11-22 in the tournament and is 1-3 against Seton Hall. This will be GU's first trip to the BIG EAST Tournament since the league expanded to 16 teams.

2008-09 will be the first year that all 16 teams will participate in the BIG EAST Tournament. The format is made up of five rounds with the top eight teams receiving a one-game bye and the top four receiving a two-game bye. The tournament will begin on Friday and conclude on Tuesday evening with the championship on ESPN.

Georgetown will tip off against Seton Hall on Friday at 6 p.m., at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The game will be streamed live over the internet on BIG EAST TV at www.BIGEAST.tv. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the Georgetown ticket office, the XL Center or Ticketmaster.
