April 20, 2001
Washington, D.C. -- Georgetown University senior Katie Smrcka-Duffy (Sterling, Va./James Madison) was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the fourth round of the WNBA draft. Smrcka-Duffy, the second all-time leading scorer at Georgetown, became the first Hoya ever taken in the WNBA draft. She was selected with the 62nd pick overall.
Smrkca-Duffy led the Hoyas to three-straight postseason appearances in her three seasons on the Hilltop after transferring from N.C. State. She finished her collegiate career with 2,072 points, including 1,671 at Georgetown. She is the Hoyas all-time leader in three-point percentage (.384) and free-throw percentage (.823). Smrcka-Duffy was a three-time Second-Team All BIG EAST selection.
"I always felt that Katie would get drafted," said head coach Patrick Knapp. "She is one of the hardest working and smartest players I have been around. Katie knows the game and when given the opportunity to tryout with Sacramento, I feel that she will earn a spot on the team. Coach Allen will really enjoy Katie's style of play."
