WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad released its 2012-13 non-conference opponents on Friday. The Hoyas will play a minimum of seven home games and five road contests including a trip to California over the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Preseason WNIT kicks off the women's college basketball season and will be played Nov. 9-18 in a three-game guarantee championship format. The Blue & Gray will open the season against Sacred Heart at McDonough Arena. Sacred Heart returns four starters from the squad that went 25-8 and won the Northeastern Conference a season ago.
The second round will feature a matchup with either Delaware or Sam Houston State. Delaware is the favorite to repeat as Colonial champs and make a postseason run with All-American Elena Delle Donne returning for her final season. Delle Donne led the nation last year in scoring, averaging 28.1 points a game for the 31-2 Blue Hens, who finished the season ranked 14th in the country. Sam Houston is coming off of postseason play after earning an 18-12 overall record and 12-4 mark in the Southland Conference.
Following the third WNIT matchup, Georgetown will host the Louisiana State University Lady Tigers at McDonough Arena on Monday, November 19. The Lady Tigers finished the season 24-11 overall and 10-6 in the SEC for a fourth-place finish. Last season, Georgetown played in Baton Rouge falling, 51-40.
Georgetown will head out on the road over the Thanksgiving holiday for a two-game tournament at the University of California Berkeley November 23 and 24. The Golden Bears were 25-10 last season and 13-5 in the Pac-12 with an NCAA Tournament berth and a win in the first round of the tournament over Iowa, 84-74.
The La Salle University Explorers will come to McDonough Arena on Wednesday, November 28. Georgetown is 4-4 all time against the Explorers winning the past two meetings. La Salle went 14-17 a year ago and 7-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The month of December will start with a three-game road swing for the Hoyas. Georgetown will play at George Washington University on December 1 and at Monmouth University on December 4. A trip to Penn State University will end the road trip.
The Colonials played at McDonough Arena a year ago falling, 59-50. The squad was 11-18 overall and 4-10 in the Atlantic 10. Monmouth also played in D.C., last season falling, 64-44. The Hawks were 19-13 overall and 12-6 in the Northeast Conference. This will be the first meeting between the Hoyas and Nittany Lions since 2007. Last year, Penn State went 26-7 and 13-3 in the Big Ten while advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16.
South Dakota State University will come to McDonough Arena on December 21. The Jackrabbits have been to four-consecutive NCAA Tournaments and were 24-9 last year.
Yale University will complete 2012 for the Blue & Gray on December 28 at home. It will be the first meeting between the squads since 1982.
Rounding out non-conference play is a future BIG EAST Conference member in the Temple University Owls. Georgetown will host Temple on January 2 before the beginning of conference play. The Owls were 23-10 last year and 13-1 in the Atlantic 10. The squad earned a WNIT berth advancing to the round of 16.
Georgetown will begin practice in October and attend the annual Midnight Madness celebration on October 12.
