The Georgetown University women's basketball squad announced its 2012-13 BIG EAST schedule on Thursday. The Hoyas will have eight conference games at McDonough Arena and eight on the road to play all 14 opponents including two matchups with both Syracuse University and the University of Pittsburgh. GU will also make four appearances on television in BIG EAST contests.
The Hoyas will open conference play on January 5 at the Providence College at 2 p.m. This marks the fourth-consecutive season that the Blue & Gray will open BIG EAST play on the road. Georgetown defeated PC last season at McDonough Arena, 60-39. The Friars went 13-17 last year.
Georgetown will host 2012 Final Four-participant the University of Connecticut on January 9 at McDonough Arena. The last time the Huskies were in town, the game was a sellout. GU fell to UConn last year in Storrs, Conn.
A pair of road games are up next as the Blue & Gray travel to Syracuse University on January 12 and play at the University of Notre Dame on January 15 at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports. Georgetown defeated the Orange twice last season including an exciting 65-62 decision in New York. The second meeting of the season is slated for February 12 at McDonough Arena. The Fighting Irish were the 2012 NCAA Runners-Up and return a majority of the squad from a season ago.
GU will host the Seton Hall University Pirates on January 19 at 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena. The game will be televised on the BIG EAST Network and picked up locally on MASN. SHU went 8-23 last season.
A trip to Rutgers University will follow as the Blue & Gray takes on the Scarlet Knights on CBS Sports on January 22 at 7 p.m., at the RAC. Georgetown defeated Rutgers last year in Washington, D.C., coming away with the 54-36 decision.
Two home games round out January as GU hosts Pittsburgh on January 26 and Cincinnati on January 29, both at McDonough Arena. The Blue & Gray had wins against both opponents last season on the road. Georgetown will play at Pitt in the second meeting of the season on February 23.
The Hoyas will open the month of February traveling with games at the University of Louisville (Feb. 2) and St. John's University (Feb. 9). Both squads were NCAA Tournament qualifiers a season ago which will make for a tough road trip for the Blue & Gray.
Hosting Villanova University is sandwiched between the second meetings with Syracuse and Pitt. The Wildcats will come to Washington, D.C., on February 16. Georgetown held on to down VU last year, 60-54.
GU's final TV game of the season will be at DePaul University on February 26 at 8 p.m. ET and televised on CBS Sports. The Blue Demons were 2012 NCAA Tournament participants, falling in the second round a season ago.
Home games against Marquette University (March 2) and the University of South Florida (March 4) round out the season for the Blue & Gray. The Hoyas defeated both squads last year on the road and the Bulls advanced to the WNIT.
The BIG EAST Tournament is scheduled for March 8-12 in Hartford, Conn., at the XL Center. All 15 conference teams will make an appearance in the tournament.
Coming off a season that saw eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship and four teams to the WNIT, the BIG EAST Conference will once again have record-setting television coverage.
The 2012-13 television schedule features every team for the seventh-consecutive year and continues to be one of the top television slates in the nation. The league's overall exposure includes one game on CBS Sports, 10 games on ESPN/ESPN2, 14 games on ESPNU and 13 games on CBS Sports Network for a total of 97 appearances, the highest mark for BIG EAST women's basketball.
