Oct. 13, 2017

WASHINGTON - Featuring a performance from rap artist Yo Gotti, the Georgetown University men's and women's basketball teams held their annual Hoya Madness celebration on Friday night kicking off the 2017-18 season.

The free event was open to all Georgetown students. Doors opened at 9:15 p.m. for the 10 p.m. event and those in attendance received a custom light up fidget spinner. Fans could also watch online following the entertainment from all over the country. Attendees were treated to performances by dance groups GU Jawani and Groove Theory as they entered the arena. Both the Georgetown cheerleaders and pep band performed later in the program.

The event also featured a shooting contest with players as well as celebrity guests including Mike Sweetney, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Sugar Rodgers taking part.

The women's team was introduced first as the players danced down a ramp to a song of their choice. Following the players, Head Coach James Howard made his debut.

After some words of encouragement from Howard, the men's players had their chance to dance through the smoke and lights giving the fans their first look at the 2017-18 Hoyas. The introductions concluded with one of the most famous Hoyas of all-time, Head Coach Patrick Ewing, returning to the Hilltop to lead the program.

The event wrapped up with a 45-minute performance by rap superstar Yo Gotti. A BET Hip Hip awards-nominated rapper, Yo Gotti released his first album Youngsta's On A Come Up in 1996 and has gone on to release six more albums including the acclaimed I Am in 2013 and, The Art of Hustle in 2016. Most recently, his collaboration with Nicki Minaj, "Rake It Up" went platinum.

The men's team will open the season on Nov. 12 at Capital One Arena against Jacksonville. The women open the season Nov. 14, hosting Howard.
