Oct. 26, 2013
WASHINGTON - A packed house of students and fans rang in the 2013-14 college basketball season at Georgetown University's McDonough Arena, as the Hoya men's and women's basketball teams were introduced at the Basketball Tip-Off Party, aired live on Fox Sports 1 Friday night.
The Basketball Tip-Off Party was capped off by a 30-minute performance from hip-hop artist B.o.B., who brought the crowd to a frenzy.
Doors to McDonough Arena opened at 7:30 p.m. and the stands were packed as the crowd awaited the introduction of the teams and the musical performance.
Early performances included the GU Step Team, the GU Step Team, GU Jawani and Groove Theory, as well a solo effort from Roy Kim, a freshman from South Korea who was the winner of that country's version of America's Got Talent.
Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach Jim Lewis and former Georgetown All-American and current Washington Wizard Otto Porter Jr. were among the judges for the Dominos Dunk Contest, featuring men's basketball senior Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA [N.C.]) and junior Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends).
Trawick had the early lead in the dunk contest after donning the mask of Jack the Bulldog and dunking from the free throw line, with an assist from junior Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA). Bowen, however, narrowed the gap with a dunk, taking a pass from sophomore D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./Oak Hill), who was in the upper balcony. Bowen took the win after catching a pass and dunking over three of the team's managers.
The women's basketball team was introduced at about 9 p.m. and they led the crowd in a chat of "Hoya Saxa" and the men's team was introduced at 9:15 p.m., capped off by Coach Thompson leading the crowd in a "We Are Georgetown" chant.
Thompson then introduced B.o.B., who sang for 30 minutes to cap off the thrilling evening. Fox Sports 1 did a whip-around at all BIG EAST Conference schools, including a live interview with Coach Thompson at approximately 10 p.m. with the studio in Los Angeles, featuring Bill Raftery and Tarik Turner.
