White and Powell Named Captains

Andrea White

Nov. 4, 2013

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Women's Basketball Head Coach Jim Lewis announced his captains for the 2013-14 season on Monday. Seniors Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) and Samisha Powell(Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) will lead the young squad this year. The Hoyas open up on Friday at McDonough Arena against the University of Richmond.

White was recently one of 10 players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad. She finished last season playing in 29 games, starting 28 and was second on the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 10.4 ppg as well as 6.5 rpg while tallying 70 steals, 21 blocks and 55 assists. Her 6.5 rpg also made her among the leaders in the conference. It was her first-career preseason honor. Last season, she won the squad's Kenneth Klein Hustle Award at the annual team banquet.

Powell returns after suffering a knee injury midway through last season. Despite missing part of the year, she ended as the fourth-leading scorer with 6.2 ppg. Powell appeared in 22 games with 21 starts, she also ranked second in assists with 68.

In their careers, the pair has been to two NCAA Tournaments including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2011, meaning they are not strangers to success.

The seniors will have a young group to look after with five freshmen on the roster as well as four sophomores.

Tipoff against Richmond is scheduled for 7 p.m., at McDonough Arena. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto and women's basketball alum Monica McNutt will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
