WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Women's Basketball Coach Jim Lewis announced the addition of two student-athletes to the 2013-14 women's basketball roster. Seniors Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) and Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) will join the squad at the beginning of the season. Both are two-sport athletes on the Hilltop.
"We're most appreciative of the lacrosse and tennis programs and their respective coaches for the Georgetown spirit they have shown in allowing Kelly and Kelyn to help us since we're a little short in numbers with injuries," said Lewis. "These two young women really personify what Georgetown is all about."
Comolli is a senior captain on the tennis team. She transferred to Georgetown from Cornell University after her freshman season and is playing in one of the top positions on the squad. Last season, Comolli played primarily at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles. She was 12-16 overall in singles play and went 8-2 with her partner in doubles matches. At Philips Exeter Academy, Comolli was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and graduated as the third leading scorer in program history.
"Kelly brings tremendous energy, passion for excellence and a competitiveness that shows in her great tennis career. She's shown she's a leader which is why she's the captain of the tennis team."
Freedman is a senior captain on the Georgetown women's lacrosse squad. Last season on the lacrosse team, she was named First Team All-BIG EAST and Second Team All-South Region. She was second on the team in goals with 31 and third in points with 41. Freedman was a three-sport athlete at Radnor High School. She led her team to a pair of lacrosse state championships, is the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball with 1,225 career points and was the All-Delco Cross Country Runner of the Year as a senior.
"We knew Kelyn had played basketball at Radnor High School, but the first day she showed up she looked like she had been playing for months. She's a talented player with length, athleticism and with the competitive nature that made her one of the top lacrosse prospects in the nation."
Both will suit up for Friday's season opener against the University of Richmond at McDonough Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto and women's basketball alum Monica McNutt will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
