Georgetown Defeats James Madison in First Round of Preseason WNIT

    WASHINGTON (Nov. 11) -- The Georgetown Hoyas opened the 2000-2001 season with a 75-70 victory over James Madison in the First Round of the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. Senior Katie Smrcka-Duffy led four Hoyas in double figures with 22 points. The Hoyas advanced to the Second Round, where they will face Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. on Monday night.

    Georgetown trailed 57-56 with 6:40 to play, but scored 12 of the next 15 points to take a 69-59 lead. The Dukes battled back and cut the lead to two with 10 seconds to play when Kunika McCoy nailed a 3-pointer. James Madison had one last chance to tie the game after GU's Porshia Jones made one of two free throws, but the Dukes committed a turnover with five seconds to play. Zsuzsanna Horvath iced the game when she scored on a lay-up with two seconds remaining.

    Shanna Pirce had 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Lesley Walker and Horvath each had 15 points for the Hoyas.
