WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (3-3) will return home to take on the Florida International University Panthers (2-4) on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas are coming off of a five-game road swing where the squad went 2-3.
Georgetown went 1-2 at the Challenge in Music City in Nashville, Tenn., over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Hoyas fell to Auburn, 60-40, on Friday and then lost to Chattanooga, 54-41, on Saturday. In the final game of the tournament, the Blue & Gray held on for a thrilling 55-54 victory over Northwestern as freshman Tatiana Thompson (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) hit the game-winning free throw with less than a second on the clock. Senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) was named to the all-tournament team.
Georgetown has three Hoyas averaging in double figures. Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) is averaging 16.5 ppg, ranking seventh in the BIG EAST, to go along with 6.0 rpg and a league-high 16 steals. Venson is second on the squad with 12.2 ppg as well as 3.2 rpg. Senior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola) is averaging a double-double with 11.7 ppg and 11.0 rpg.
Georgetown is outrebounding opponents by a 2.2 rpg margin to rank second in the BIG EAST and also has a +3.7 turnover margin.
FIU is 2-4 on the season and embarking on a three-game road swing including Howard and Morgan State. Kristian Hudson is leading the way with 16.2 ppg. Kiandre’a Pound is second on the squad with 13.2 ppg as well as 9.3 rpg. FIU’s victories this season are against Air Force (70-69) and Charleston Southern (77-70).
The Hoyas are 3-0 against the Panthers and 1-0 at home. Last year, the Blue & Gray downed FIU, 66-53, on the road. Faith Woodard (C’17) led the way with 20 points, while White added 15 points. The last meeting at home was a 76-64 Hoya victory on February 12, 2001.
